Where to actually take the dog

Mount Rainier is stunning — but dogs aren’t allowed on National Park trails. Good news: some of the best walks around Packwood are just outside park boundaries.

Skate Creek Road trails
A network of forest service roads and unofficial paths threading through the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Quiet, wide, and generally low-traffic. Perfect for a real hike where the dog can be a dog.
10 min · Water and fetch
Cowlitz River access
The Cowlitz runs right through Packwood, with several public access points for fishing, wading, and letting a water-loving dog swim. Great for hot summer afternoons and post-hike cool-downs.
One honest note
Mount Rainier National Park doesn’t allow dogs on trails, and neither do most of the paved roads inside. Bringing your dog means adjusting the itinerary — but Packwood and the surrounding National Forest have plenty of room to roam. Ask us for local favorites when you arrive.

What to know
- $50 pet fee per stay covers up to two dogs
- Bringing more than two? Message us first — we usually say yes
- Dogs are welcome inside but not on beds or upholstered furniture
- Please don’t leave dogs unattended unless crated
- Camp Alta is not pet-friendly — too small to work for anyone
- Mount Rainier NP trails don’t allow dogs — Skate Creek and Cowlitz River are your spots
