The color show
Vine maples turn scarlet, the meadows at Paradise go gold, and the drive up Highway 12 becomes the destination. Late September through October is peak.
Trails to yourself
The summer rush at Rainier is over — no lines at the entrance, open parking at the trailheads, and quiet at Packwood Lake and Tatoosh Falls, right by the cabins.
Hot tub weather
Crisp air, steaming water, stars out by 7pm. This is the season the hot tubs and cedar sauna were made for — cold cheeks, warm everything else.
Paradise is up the road. Even better in fall.
